Skrull

From Free net encyclopedia

Template:Cosmic Marvel The Skrull are an alien race in Marvel Comics' fictional universe. An advanced intergalactic race, the Skrull have had several encounters with the Fantastic Four, beginning in Fantastic Four #2 (January, 1962). They inhabit the Andromeda Galaxy and their homeworld was Skrullos, until it was devoured by Galactus.

Skrulls resemble green-skinned humanoids with large pointed ears and corrugated chins. Male Skrulls are typically hairless, although not uniformly so.

The Dire Wraiths central to the plot of Rom were an evil, parasitic magic-using Deviant offshoot of the Skrull race, analogous to vampires.

Skrulls are capable of producing hybrid offspring with humans and Kree, and possibly other species.

In the Ultimate Marvel line of comics, the Skrulls are also known as the Chitauri and the Annakui. They are unable to exist in our universe unless they take someone else's form. They tried to take over the world but were stopped by The Ultimates. Recently in the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic Skrulls simlar to the Earth-616 version have appeared which may imply that other races simply confused them (both being reptilian shapeshifters) or that the Chitauri are the Dire Wraiths of the Ultimate comics.

History

The Skrull have been spacefarers for millions of years. Originally, they were peaceful merchants, willing to share their technology with all who were worthy. However, when they arrived on the planet Hala, home to the barbaric Kree and the peaceful Cotati, they held a contest between both races. The Cotati won, but the Kree took the Skrull's spaceships by force and developed their own technology from it. This forced the Skrulls to become militaristic and aggressive and a war between Kree and Skrulls started, a conflict that would rage for millennia with only short interruptions. Due to its strategic position Earth has been a target of both Kree and Skrull and hence the Skrulls have tried to invade it several times. Every attempt so far has failed, though it has been hinted that the Skrulls do have dozens of hidden agents on Earth and may even control whole towns.

Until recently, all Skrull were shapeshifters. However, during the factional strife following the destruction of Skrullos, the insane Zabyk triggered a bomb whose hyperspatial radiations would rob all Skrull, everywhere, of their shapeshifting abilities, trapping them in whatever form they occupied at the time. This devastated Skrull society.

Shortly after this event, Kl'rt the Super-Skrull was rescued from Earth's van Allen belts, where he had been trapped as a stream of dissociated particles. Because he had not physically existed at the time, Kl'rt remained unaffected by Zabyk's bomb.

Kl'rt joined forces with the Silver Surfer, who introduced him to S'Byll, one of the claimants to the Skrull Throne. By using Kl'rt as a template, S'Byll was able to regain her own shapeshifting abilities and, more importantly, to restore them in others. She soon was acclaimed as Empress, a position she holds to this day.

Notable Skrulls

Warskrulls

Image:Warskrull.png Normal Skrull can only take on the appearance of their template, not the abilities of that person. Warskrulls are an elite group of Skrulls gifted with the ability to emulate the powers as well as the appearance of their templates. Warskrulls do not naturally have this ability, special encoding technology is used to grant them their powers.

They first appeared in the pages of the Uncanny X-Men comic book. In this story the Warskrulls sought an alliance with the X-Men's enemy, Deathbird in a plot to conquer the Shi'ar empire. The X-Men routed them out and Wolverine killed the Warskrull posing as Professor Xavier.

Trivia

  • In the Ultimate Universe, the Skrulls consider the name Chitauri offensive and politically incorrect.
