Slipmat

From Free net encyclopedia

A slipmat is a circular piece of slippery cloth or synthetic materials, designed to allow disc jockeys to turn or stop vinyl records on record players, or to scratch. See: Slip-cueing.

Placed directly between the record and the deckplatter, the slipmat reduces friction to allow the turntable to continue to turn underneath the record. This has two benefits.

  1. When cueing up a record, and the DJ has held the record stopped, at the moment the DJ wishes to start the record playing, the turntable doesn't need to get 'up to speed' as it has always been playing underneath the record. This is essential when trying to start a record with the bass beats playing at the same time as another record.
  2. For scratch DJs who pull the record back and forth, the slip mat means that the deckplatter isn't being pulled back and forth too, which would be too much weight and intertia to scratch properly.
