Slush

From Free net encyclopedia

Slush is a slurry mixture of liquid and solid forms of water. In the natural environment, slush forms as ice and snow melts. This often mixes with dirt and other materials, resulting in a gray or muddy brown color. Often, solid ice or snow will block the drainage of fluid water from slushy areas, so slush often goes through multiple freeze/thaw cycles before completely disappearing. In areas where road salt is used to clear roadways, slush forms at colder temperatures than it would ordinarily, and only in salted areas; this can produce a number of different consitencies over the same geographical area.

"Slush" can also refer to the fat or grease that is obtained by boiling salted meat. This is where the term slush fund originated.

Since water/ice slush has a very low temperature, it has been used as the basis for partially-frozen beverages (using a clean water source, of course). Water and ice are mixed with sugar, fruit, and/or other flavorings. It is a popular refreshment in the United States and in some fast food restaurant chains. Its consistency is between liquid and a milkshake. Brands of slushes include Slush Puppie and Slurpee. Presumably, the "Squishee" sold at Kwik-E-Mart on The Simpsons is also a slush drink.

Usually the making of slushes include renting an expensive machine, which is able to produce the product almost instantly. It can be made with the usual household machinery but it takes some time (12+ hours) to complete a smooth variety. Tastes vary widely, just like ice or other sweets. Some like to call slush drinks "slushies".ru:Снежура
