Solo (music)

From Free net encyclopedia

In music, solo means to play or sing alone. This does not necessarily mean that no one else is playing at that time, only that the soloist's part is the most prominent. Solos are opportunities for musicians to demonstrate their musicianship, as well as creativity, in case of improvised solos. In jazz, solos are usually improvised. It is common for two or more musicians to improvise together, trading ideas as they alternate playing - a musical conversation of sorts.

It may also refer to a solo album, which is an album released by a single artist.

A related term is soli, which means that a whole section of a musical ensemble is playing the same thing at the same time.
