Something for Kate

From Free net encyclopedia

Something for Kate is a rock band from Melbourne, Australia. Its lineup as of 1998 include primary songwriter, vocalist and guitarist Paul Dempsey, drummer Clint Hyndman, and bassist Stephanie Ashworth.

Paul and Clint met at Padua College, Mornington Peninsula. Stephanie joined in 1998 after a distinguished career in the band Sandpit, turning down an offer to play with American band Hole.

Ashworth is the only current non-founding member. Previous bassists include:

  • Julian Carroll 1995-97 Left to pursue career and family.
Julian played with the band on 2nd September 2004 at a special one-off 10-year celebration gig at Melbourne's Prince of Wales.
  • Toby Ralph 1997-98

Touring members have included:

  • Wally Gunn - second guitar and keyboads.
  • Phillip 'Pip' Branson - second guitar and violin.
Ex-member of Sydney band Sidewinder, and currently (2005) playing with band as "Pip Branson Corporation".
  • Simon Burke - keyboards

As of February 2006, Something for Kate are finishing up the mixing of a new, as yet untitled album. The band has been keeping a studio diary of progress which is accessible at their official website [1]. Importantly they are no longer using Trina Shoemaker as a producer; she who was responsible for much of the sound on their previous albums Echolalia and The Official Fiction, which some fans criticised for being too mellow.

They have also been demoing a few new songs at live shows, however due to an official request not to circulate unreleased songs it is very hard to get a hold of recordings.

History of Name

Early on they used the name El Presidentè, before changing that to Fish of the Day. The publican at their first gig suggested they change it.

The new words were chosen from a shopping list, Kate being Paul Dempsey's Jack Russell terrier.

Fans often shorten the name to SFK or S4K.

Something for Kate have played secret shows under dummy names. Some of the names used include-

  • George Kaplan and the Editors
