Southern College of Optometry
From Free net encyclopedia
The Southern College of Optometry, located at 1245 Madison Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, is dedicated to the study of optometry, the field of medicine dedicated to not only the performance of refractive eye examinations and the fitting of necessary corrective lenses or vision therapy, but also the diagnosis and treatment of numerous ocular diseases. After completing a 4-year graduate program, students at SCO receive the degree of Doctor of Optometry (OD).
SCO is a private institution founded in 1932, and it is one of only 17 schools of optometry in the U.S. Over the years there have been attempts to merge Southern College with a public institution in Memphis, either the University of Tennessee Health Science Center or the University of Memphis, but these efforts have never been successful.
One of Southern College of Optometry's most famous alumni is undoubtedly Dr. Gil Morgan. Dr. Morgan is better known as a regular from golf's PGA TOUR than he is as an optometrist. He now often competes on the PGA Champions Tour.
The winners of the Varilux Optometry Super Bowl in 2003, 2004, and 2005 were all students from SCO.
The fourth floor of the tower at SCO features the 20/20 Diner, an eatery which has received notable praise from Commercial Appeal blogger Leslie Kelly.[1] The 20/20 is open to the public.
