Splice

Splice has several meanings:

  • In outdoor recreation (such as sailing or camping) it means to join two pieces of rope or wire by weaving the strands of each into the other - see rope splicing
  • In genetics it means to join together or insert pieces of genetic material when altering the genetic structure of something or when forming a new combination - see genetic splicing
  • In optical fiber it means to join together two or more optical fibers by the use of a fusion machine or a mechanical coupler.
  • The splice on a cricket bat is also where the handle is joined to the body of the bat.
  • In production it means switching from one web roll to another by joining the beginning of one roll to the end of the other roll thus avoiding machine stopage.
