Origin

The Star Forge was a dark side artifact that was created by the Infinite Empire of the Rakata thousands of years before the rise of the Galactic Republic. A giant automated shipyard, the Star Forge drew matter and energy from a nearby star, creating an endless supply of ships, droids, and other war material. After the fall of the Infinite Empire, the Star Forge was deserted and eventually forgotten. The only way one could find the location to the Star Forge was by accessing the Star Maps and using the co-ordinates to find the location of the Star Forge.

Rise of Revan

As an artifact of the dark side, the Star Forge corrupted those who used it, feeding its desire for death. After the Mandalorian Wars, it came into the service of Darth Revan and Darth Malak, who had been powerful and honorable Jedi Knights before discovering the Star Maps leading to the location of the ancient space station. The Jedi, consumed by the dark energies of the Star Forge used it to wage war on the Republic. Their assault was largely successful due to the Star Forge itself.

The Unknown Planet

The Rakatan homeworld lay near the Star Forge and revolved around the star which the Star Forge drew energy from. The Unknown Planet, as it is called, housed a special device that would crash any ship coming within a certain distance of it. It is believed that this device was implemented by the Elder Rakata after the fall of the Infinite Empire, to prevent anyone from obtaining the space station. The device was in a sacred temple, inaccessible until the force field around it could be disabled.

Battle of the Star Forge

The Republic learned of the existence of the Star Forge from former-Sith Lord, Revan, and a young Jedi Knight, Bastila Shan. The two and eight others searched for ancient Star Maps, which were planted across the galaxy by the ancient Rakata, and led them to the Star Forge.

Revan's team contacted the Republic Fleet, which arrived suddenly and swiftly out of hyperspace to attack. Not surprised by his former-master's plans, Darth Malak, the Leader of the Sith Empire, who currently controlled the Star Forge, ordered the immediate interception of the Republic Fleet.

The Sith had the help of Bastila, whom Malak had captured and tortured, until she willingly became his apprentice. The former-Jedi used her rare ability, Battle Meditation, to turn the odds against the Republic.

With the Republic Fleet unable to make any effective attack on the Star Forge, and the Sith numbers growing, Revan, his crew and a Jedi Strike Team boarded the Star Forge while Admiral Dodonna distracted the Sith Armada. Onboard, Bastila dueled with Revan. Revan won, and turned Bastila back the light side, allowing her to use her ability now against the Sith. Revan reached Malak to see him slaughter the last two of the Jedi Stike Team. After a long duel with his old apprentice, Revan killed Malak, fleeing the Star Forge as it began to fall and burn up in the star that powered it.

There is a dark side ending, which is an alternative to the game KOTOR. The Sith Armada completely destroys the Republic Fleet, and Bastila Shan convinces Revan to kill Malak and take over the Sith Empire, accepting her as his apprentice. After Malak dies, the Sith Armada obliterates the Republic Fleet.

Destruction

The Star Forge was destroyed at the end of the Jedi Civil War, 3,956 years BBY, by a Republic fleet bolstered by the Battle Meditation of Bastila Shan. In the alternate dark side ending, Darth Revan takes control of the Star Forge by killing Darth Malak and reclaiming his title as Dark Lord of the Sith.

In the alternate ending where Revan returns to claim the title of Dark Lord of the Sith, the Star Forge defeated the Republic fleet, but after Revan's departure it either fell apart or became unusable. Although the Star Forge was able to maintain itself for a very long time beforehand, this explanation is possible because of the substantial damage that it would have received at the end of the Jedi Civil War.

According to a Holocron left by Bastila in this same alternate timeline, after Revan left the Star Forge, many Sith tried to harness its power, but none were strong enough and died under its awesome power. This Holocron can be viewed in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II if the player chooses to say that Revan went to the dark side.
