Stephanus Van Cortlandt

Stephanus Van Cortlandt (May 7, 1643 - November 25, 1700) was the first native born mayor of New York (1677-1678; 1686-1688). His wife was Gertruj Van Schuyler sister of Pieter Schuyler. (A brother Jacobus Van Cortlandt also served as mayor of New York).

- A daughter Catherine Van Cortlandt married to Frederick Philipse-see Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site-these were great-grandparents of wife of Loyalist Colonel [Beverley Robinson]. {Bevereley Robinson was a first cosuin once removed to Carter Braxton's first wife Judith Robinson and was also a cousin to Christopher Robinson (1763-98). A son of Bevereley Robinson named Sir William Henry Robinson was married to Catherine daugther of Cortlandt Skinner.}
- Two grandsons were Lt. General Willaim Skinner and his brother Loyalist General Cortlandt Skinner. {Also Cortlandt SKinner was father in law to General Sir William Henry Robinson {See preceding entry} and Field Marshal Sir George Nugent}.
- One granddaughter Margaret Kemple was the wife of Thomas Gage; their son Henry Gage, 3rd Viscount Gage would marry his cousin Susanna Maria Skinner. {See below}
- One great-granddaughter Susanna Maria Skinner was the daughter of William Skinner.
- One Great-granddaughter MAry Watts was the wife of John Johnson (Loyalist)
- One Great-grandson was Philip Van Cortlandt son of Pierre Van Cortlandt and Joanna Livingston.
- One great-grandson was Stephen Van Rensselaer II who married to Catherina daughter of Congressman Philip Livingston. Their son Stephen Van Rensselaer III was married to Margaretia daughter of General Philip Schuyler
- One Great-nephew was John Jay.
