From Free net encyclopedia

Stevan E. "Steve" Pearce (born August 24, 1947) has represented New Mexico's second Congressional district (map) as a Republican in the United States House of Representatives since 2003. He is currently an Assistant Majority Whip and also serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he is the Vice-Chair of the Water, Resources and Environment Subcommittee. He was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives in 1996 and re-elected in 1998. In 2000, he ran for United States Senate but lost in the Republican primary.

Steve Pearce is currently married to Cynthia Pearce, and currently resides in Hobbs, New Mexico. Pearce served in Vietnam as a pilot for the Air Force, and is still an avid pilot today.

In 2005, Pearce was embroiled in controversy when he was found to have plagiarized several articles which were published in small papers throughout New Mexico and attributed to him. Even though new to Congress, Pearce is widely credited with being a talented Washington insider, and has earned the support and admiration of many, such as the indicted former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and Vice President Dick Cheney, who said Pearce "does a superb job for Congress." Pearce received a 100% rating from the Christian Coalition. He is expected to seek reelection in 2006.
