Stevenson, Washington

Stevenson is a city located in Skamania County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,200. It is the county seat of Skamania CountyTemplate:GR. Stevenson is home to the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center, which focuses on several tribes that were once located near the Columbia River.

Stevenson was officially incorporated on December 16, 1907.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²). 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.37% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,200 people, 474 households, and 307 families residing in the city. The population density was 313.1/km² (813.4/mi²). There were 523 housing units at an average density of 136.4/km² (354.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.92% White, 0.17% African American, 2.42% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.75% from other races, and 3.17% from two or more races. 5.33% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 474 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,979, and the median income for a family was $38,750. Males had a median income of $36,042 versus $25,893 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,602. 22.8% of the population and 17.8% of families were below the poverty line. 30.2% of those under the age of 18 and 17.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
Recreation
Locals frequent Stevenson High School football games and the Main Street Market for recreation and entertainment. Stevenson is in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge. Windsurfing and Kiteboarding are active seasonal sports as well as Hiking, Hunting and Fishing.
