Stridulation
From Free net encyclopedia
Stridulation is the production of sounds by an insect by rubbing together two parts of its body, referred to as the stridulatory organs. The mechanism is best known in crickets, grasshoppers, and cicadas, but other insects which stridulate include the Black imported fire ant (Solenopsis richteri) and larval Lucanidae (stag beetle), Passalidae (Bessbug), and Geotrupidae (earth-boring dung beetle).
Stridulation is believed to be for attracting a mate, or as a form of territorial behaviour.
