Strongbow Cider

From Free net encyclopedia

Image:Cider-strongbow.jpg Strongbow is a brand of cider originating in England, but now available all around the world. It is manufactured by the brewing company Scottish & Newcastle, who bought its original owners, Bulmers, in 2003. It is the UK's most popular cider, accounting for more than half of the draught cider sold in British pubs.

Television advertising around 1998 featured Johnny Vaughan, telling us to "loaf it". Strongbow drinking is heavily aimed at university students.

The alcoholic strength of Strongbow Cider is 5.3% vol (10.6 proof). It is a slightly dry cider, unlike its sugary bottled brother, Woodpecker.

In the USA and Australia, Strongbow is also available but is brewed to a strength of 5%. Strongbow is available in three varieties in Australia: Dry, Sweet and Original. In the USA, only Strongbow Original is commonly available.

Strongbow is named after the Norman knight, Richard de Clare, later Earl of Pembroke, who was nicknamed "Strongbow"; by his troops for his feats of strength and prowess with the Longbow. The "thudding arrow" has been a feature of the brand's television advertising since the 1960s.

In the United Kingdom, Strongbow is often recommended to be drunk whilst eating indian curries. Many local Balti houses suggest Strongbow whilst dining, and chain-pub Wetherspoons promotes Strongbow throughout it's 650 pubs espcially during it's Curry Club night, which is currently Thursdays.
