Subluxation
From Free net encyclopedia
In medicine, a subluxation is an incomplete or partial dislocation of a joint or organ [1].
In ophthalmology, subluxation is most often used in the context of describing ectopia lentis, an ocular condition characterized by a displaced or malpositioned lens within the eye[2]. Although a relatively rare disorder, subluxated lenses are frequently found in those who have had ocular trauma and those with certain systemic disorders, such as Marfan syndrome. Some subluxated lenses may require removal, as in the case of those that float freely or those that have opacified to form cataracts.
In orthopedics, subluxation refers to the abnormal movement of a bone within a joint. For example, nursemaid's elbow is the subluxation of the head of the radius in the elbow.
In the practice of chiropractic developed by Daniel D. Palmer in the late 1800s, Palmer believed that he had discovered the cause of all diseases suffered by mankind: the chiropractic "subluxation". The current chiropractic definition of subluxation is "a complex of functional and/or structural and/or pathological articular changes that compromise neural integrity and/or influence organ system and general health"Template:Fact.
