Suleiman Pasha

From Free net encyclopedia

Suleiman Pasha (Süleyman Paşa or Soliman Al Fransawi Pasha, aka Colonel Sève) (born in Lyon, July 1788, died in Cairo, March 12, 1860) was born as Joseph Anthelme Sève.

His birth is given as 11 or 17 May 1788 in some documents.

A former officer in the army of Napoleon, he converted to Islam and was recruited to help build the Egyptian army on the European model.

There is a statue of him in the Cairo Military Museum and a bust at the Prefecture in Lyon. His great-grand-daughter was Queen Nazli of Egypt, wife of King Fuad, and mother of King Farouk. As of 2003, he still had many descendants living in Egypt.

Colonel Sève should not be confused with Suleiman Pasha, commander in Russo-Turkish War, who lived it the same century.
