From Free net encyclopedia
The Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major by Sergei Prokofiev, opus 100, was written in 1944.
It is scored for an orchestra consisting of two flutes, piccolo, two oboes, cor anglais, two clarinets, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four French horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, wood blocks, tambourine, triangle, snare drum, cymbals, bass drum, tam-tam, timpani, harp, piano and strings (the usual first and second violins, violas, cellos and double basses). As is usual for symphonies, the piece is in four movements:
- Andante (in B-flat major)
- Allegro marcato (in D minor)
- Adagio (in F major)
- Allegro giocoso (in B-flat major)
The symphony was premiered on January 13, 1945 in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory by the USSR State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Prokofiev himself. The Red Army had just announced its victory in the war a few minutes before the premiere, and the heroic spirit of the work suited perfectly. The premiere was very well received, and has remained one of the composer's most popular works.
A typical performance of the piece will last around 40–45 minutes.ja:交響曲第5番_(プロコフィエフ) sl:Simfonija št. 5 (Prokofjev)
