Thousand Palms is a census-designated place located in Riverside County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,120.

Geography

Thousand Palms is located at 33°49'1" North, 116°23'14" West (33.816868, -116.387143)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²). 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 5,120 people, 1,912 households, and 1,260 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 494.2/km² (1,279.7/mi²). There were 2,557 housing units at an average density of 246.8/km² (639.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 74.77% White, 0.72% African American, 0.92% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.25% Pacific Islander, 19.39% from other races, and 3.20% from two or more races. 43.57% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,912 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% were non-families. 26.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.27.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 23.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 100.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $34,172, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $33,325 versus $25,543 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $16,790. 12.8% of the population and 9.4% of families were below the poverty line. 17.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
