Thurles

Image:Market day thurles ireland 1848.jpg Thurles (Irish: Durlas) is a town in County Tipperary, Ireland, situated on the River Suir, with a population of around 8,000. Thurles is linked by rail to most Irish cities via the National Rail Network. It is twinned with Bollington in England, and Salt Lake City, Utah. It is also known as the birthplace of the GAA, which was founded at Hayes's Hotel in Liberty Square in 1884.

Semple Stadium in Thurles is Ireland's second largest sports arena with a capacity of 55,000. It is the spiritual home of Munster hurling and many famous matches, especially Munster Finals have been played here, taking advantage of the smooth playing surface which is reputed to be the best in IrelandTemplate:Fact. It was also the site of the Féile rock festival during the 1990s.

The town also has a thriving college which was built in the past 5-6 years and a new arts & library is currently being built beside the River Suir on the former site of the swimming pool.
