Trevor David Pinnock CBE (born December 16, 1946) is a conductor and harpsichordist. He is best known for his interpretations of Baroque music with authentic instruments.

Biography

Trevor Pinnock was born in Canterbury where he attended the Cathedral Choir School, Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys and studied organ and harpsichord at the Royal College of Music in London. At one point, he was told that it would be impossible to make a living as a harpsichordist. To maximise his possibilities for work early on in his career, he included in his repertoire not only the regular baroque repertoire, but also modern harpsichord concertos including Roberto Gerhard's concerto for harpsichord, percussion and strings, Manuel de Falla's concierto for harpsichord and 9 wind instruments, and Frank Martin's Petite symphonie concertante for harp, harpsichord, piano and double string orchestra.

He made his London debut at the Royal Festival Hall with the Galliard Ensemble in 1966. In 1973 he founded, with violinist Simon Standage, cellist Anthony Pleeth, flautist Stephen Preston and others, The English Concert, an ensemble specialising in performances of Baroque music on period instruments, which he directed (usually from the harpsichord, also playing continuo) until 2003, being succeeded by Andrew Manze.

He made his New York debut in 1988 conducting Handel's opera Giulio Cesare. From 1991 to 1996 he was artistic director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Canada, following which he remained artistic advisor.

To celebrate his 60th birthday, in late 2006 he is to tour Europe, Asia and America with Bach's Brandenburg Concertos with the European Brandenburg Ensemble, a group of baroque musicians especially formed by him for the purpose. They will also record these works, due to be released by Avie Records some time in early 2007.

He usually plays his two-manual harpsichord by David Jacques Way (1982), built after the mid-18th century French tradition of Hemsch. It has 1x4' and 2x8' ranks of strings with a buff stop.

He was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1992 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Ottawa in 1993. [1]
