Troy, Ohio

Troy is a city located in Miami County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 21,999. It is the county seat of Miami CountyTemplate:GR.

Troy is located at 40°2'30" North, 84°12'31" West (40.041621, -84.208627)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 25.3 km² (9.8 mi²). 25.1 km² (9.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.72% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 21,999 people, 8,920 households, and 5,887 families residing in the city. The population density was 875.7/km² (2,267.8/mi²). There were 9,497 housing units at an average density of 378.0/km² (979.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.55% White, 4.78% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.66% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.50% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 8,920 households out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 29.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.96.

Image:Troy-ohio-post-office.jpg In the city the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $39,531, and the median income for a family was $46,889. Males had a median income of $35,819 versus $25,536 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,892. 8.2% of the population and 6.4% of families were below the poverty line. 10.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.4% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

The current mayor of Troy is Mike Beamish.

Troy is home to the world famous Strawberry Festival which takes place in early June.

Shortly before the 2004 presidential election, President Bush made a public appearance and speech in the center of the town square.

Troy has recently become the home of the first civilian owned/operated nuclear silo.
