The University of Missouri System is the designated public research-land grant university system of the state of Missouri. There are four campuses in the system:
- University of Missouri - Columbia
- University of Missouri - Kansas City
- University of Missouri - Rolla
- University of Missouri - St. Louis
Degrees from all four campuses are conferred through the University of Missouri.
History
The University of Missouri was founded in 1839 in Columbia which remained the sole campus until 1870, when a school of mines and metallurgy was established in Rolla. The University of Missouri established the first department of electrical engineering in the United States in 1886. In 1963 the University of Kansas City, which had been a private institution, was acquired by the University and a new campus was created in St. Louis, creating the present four campus system. In the minds of many, the Columbia campus is still the 'main' campus; located there are offices of the University of Missouri System.
