University of Wisconsin System

The University of Wisconsin System is the state university system in Wisconsin, composed of fifteen institutions with twenty-six campuses.

There are two research universities that grant doctoral degrees:

UW–Madison, the flagship campus (often referred to simply as the "University of Wisconsin," Wisconsin," or "UW")
UW–Milwaukee

There are eleven comprehensive universities that grant baccalaureate and master's degrees:

There is one institution, the (UW Colleges), that grants associate degrees on thirteen local campuses:

The UW Colleges also grants associate degrees through its online program.

Two year "technical" colleges are operated by the Wisconsin Technical College System.

There is also the UW Extension, which operates extension courses statewide through offices in each of Wisconsin's 72 counties.

The UW System was founded in 1971 with the merger of the University of Wisconsin, which included the Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay and Parkside campuses, the Centers and the Extension, and the Wisconsin State Universities, which included the other nine campuses. It serves approximately 160,000 students, ranking second in the nation behind California.Template:Fact

The name University of Wisconsin (or simply UW) is often used to refer to the Madison campus, especially with regard to sports.
