Vendrizi

From Free net encyclopedia

The Vendrizi are a race in the fictional Babylon 5 universe. Like the Trill of the Star Trek universe, or the Drakh keepers of the Babylon 5 universe, the Vendrizi are symbiont life form that joins with a host.

The Vendrizi tend to keep a low profile because they knew that their vast knowledge could make them targets for those who wish to suppress that knowledge or that others would use that knowledge for evil purposes.

Biology

The Vendrizi symbiont is a creature less than one meter long. It is primarily made up of a neural tissue with connectors that allow it to connect to the nervous systems of other creatures.

The Vendrizi are usually able to safely join with hosts of most species. However, the presence of certain drugs in the host's system can cause a reaction that can be fatal for both the host and symbiont. It's not known whether or not other preexisting conditions within the host could cause fatal reactions.

When a Vendrizi is joined to a humanoid host, it usually wraps itself around the spinal cord. It then uses neural connectors to connect itself into the host's nervous system. Unlike the Drakh keepers, the Vendrizi symbionts do not forcefully take control of the host. Rather the Vendrizi symboint lives in peaceful coexistence with its host, and both the host and symboint share themselves with each other.

Unlike the Trill of the Star Trek universe, the Vendrizi choose hosts that usually are not the very best their societies have to offer. The Vendrizi tend towards people whose lives are not going well, who would probably never be more than what they currently were, and whose lives did no longer had purpose.

History

The Vendrizi symbionts history begins half a million years ago when there species was created by an unidentified race. They were created to be living records of history. The Vendrizi have existed since that time, traveling the galaxy from one host to the next. During their travels they have been on planets that are so far away that there was no name for them. They had heard music that had been written before the human race had developed language.

In the mid 23rd century, a group of Vendrizi arrived at Babylon 5. Ranger Marcus Cole noticed his friend Duncan who lived on the station was acting strangely. Also a man had turned up dead from mysterious circumstances. Dr. Franklin found the remains of a Vendrizi in the man's body. Dr. Franklin and Marcus found the Vendrizi, who briefly took them prisoner. Dr. Franklin was made to work on a man whose joining had gone badly. Marcus managed to escape from the Vendrizi, and joined Dr. Franklin. It was then that they learned that about the Vendrizi and their mission. Duncan told them that the people who had joined were not forced to do this, but instead each one had volunteered to be joined. Because Marcus was concerned that the Vendrizi was forcing Duncan to say this, Duncan gave up the symbiont. Once free, Duncan said that everything the Vendrizi said was true. Satisfied that no one was being coerced into doing this, Dr. Frankin told the Vendrizi that potential hosts would need to give written consent, and that future joinings would be done in Medlab under his supervision. The Vendrizi and potential hosts both agreed to this.

The Vendrizi had decided after their work on Babylon 5 was done to go into hiding because of the growing Shadow War. Their future activities have not been documented.
