(Redirected from Viscount Bruce of Ampthill)

The title Marquess of Ailesbury was created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on July 17, 1821 for Charles Brudenell-Bruce, 2nd Earl of Ailesbury.

Robert Bruce, Lord Kinloss, eldest son of the first Earl of Elgin, was created Earl of Ailesbury, Viscount Bruce of Ampthill, and Baron Bruce of Skelton on March 18, 1664, all in the Peerage of England. He subsequently inherited the Earldom of Elgin in the Peerage of Scotland, and the titles remained united until 1747. The third Earl of Ailesbury was created Baron Bruce of Tottenham on April 17, 1746, in the Peerage of Great Britain but on his death in 1747, his English titles became extinct, except for that of Baron Bruce of Tottenham, which was inherited by his nephew Thomas Brudenell-Bruce by special remainder. His Scottish titles passed to the 9th Earl of Kincardine.

The Earldom of Ailesbury was again created for the second Baron Bruce of Tottenham on June 10, 1776, in the Peerage of Great Britain. The second Earl was created Marquess of Ailesbury in 1821, with subsidiary titles Earl Bruce of Whorlton in the County of York and Viscount Savernake of Savernake Forest in the County of Wilts, all in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. In 1868, the second Marquess inherited the titles of Earl of Cardigan (1661), Baron Brudenell of Stonton [Wyvill] (1628), and Baron Brudenell of Deene (1780), all in the Peerage of England, and the English baronetcy of Deene in the County of Northampton, now subsidiary titles of the Marquessate.

Lord Ailesbury is also Hereditary Warden of Savernake Forest.

The heir apparent to the marquessate normally bears the courtesy title Earl of Cardigan, whose heir apparent subsequently holds the title Viscount Savernake.
