For real-time chat with other Wikipedians, in addition to live recent changes (find out more), several Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channels are located on the freenode network (website):

Channels
- #wikipedia is the main channel, which is used by most Wikipedia users, although conversations are occasionally off-topic.
- #wikipedia-en is another channel, specifically for discussion of the English language Wikipedia, and is usually more on-topic.
- #mediawiki is particularly for discussion about the MediaWiki software.
- #wikimedia is for discussion of Wikimedia Foundation issues.
- #wikimedia-tech is for discussion of technical issues relating to the Wikimedia servers.
- #wikiproject is especially for Wikipedia:WikiProject coordination and collaboration.
- #wikipedia-bootcamp is a training channel for new Wikipedians -see Wikipedia:Bootcamp.
- #vandalism-en-wp is set-up by the Counter Vandalism Unit to list and discuss current vandalism.
- #wikipedia-en-vandalism2 is set-up by the Counter Vandalism Unit as an alternate channel to list vandalism.
- #wikipedia-en-suspectedits is the output of a bot run by Gmaxwell that checks diffs from recent changes for text that might be vandalism.
- #wikipedia-mediation is used by the Medcom
- #wikipedia-probation is used by the Mentcom and its bot
- #wikipedia-en-admins is a private channel for administrators - contact James F., Shanel, or Talrias for access.
- #wikipedia-esperanza, a place where Esperanzians can go to find both guidance and support, as well as just to have fun!
- #wikipedia-britannica - discussion of Encyclopedia Britanica's response to Nature's comparison of Wikipedia to EB.
Please note that several of these channels have a policy against publishing chat logs. Please see m:IRC channels for more details.
There are also, in addition to the above channels, several for specific different language Wikipedias, and for different Wikimedia projects. For example, Wikinews uses #wikinews, and the German Wikipedia uses #wikipedia-de.
Jabber
If you don't use IRC, there is a Jabber chat room at en.wikipedia@conference.jabber.org, although it is empty more often than not.
Web based CGI version
For those of you who can only use HTTP, a web based version, running CGI:IRC is available.
Tools
- Wikifier and WikipediaLink plugins for the Colloquy IRC client makes wikilinks clickable.
- CryptoDerk's Vandal Fighter is a Java program that gives a nice, customizable front end to the Recent Changes IRC channel.
