WZPL

WZPL is an FM radio station based in Greenfield, Indiana, although the main studio is located in north Indianapolis, Indiana, and broadcasting on 99.5 MHz with an effective radiated power of 19 kW. It began as WSMJ in 1962 and changed to a disco format and the name WIKS-FM "Kiss 99" in 1979. Later, a contemporary hit radio format was adopted which, aside from a brief experiment playing classic rock in 1989, has continued to this day, when it plays mainly Top 40 music. The WZPL moniker was adopted in 1984, but over the years the station has referred to itself by various informal names, including "Z99.5", "Indy's Apple WZPL," "99 1/2 WZPL," and "99 1/2 ZPL." The current owners, and of sister stations WXNT and WNTR, are Entercom Communications.
