Wainscots is an academic term used in English literature studies, first coined by The Encyclopedia of Fantasy in 1997.
The term is applied loosely to fantasy (but not always) that involve secret societies hiding in the real world and typically have an insight into the mechanics of the world better than the general populace do. Generally the secret society or wainscot society is portrayed positively while the larger mainstream society is portrayed to be more ignorant of their own world.

Some have suggested the term can be applied outside the field of Fantasy, such as The Matrix.
