Warp core breach
From Free net encyclopedia
In the Star Trek fictional universe, a warp core breach is when the onboard matter and antimatter in the reaction chamber combine in an uncontrolled manner. This results in the destruction of the ship and can also cause a shockwave that can destroy unprotected starships and stations within a one million kilometer radius.
If a warp core breach is unavoidable, the warp core can be ejected from the ship, or if possible, a saucer separation could be performed (if this feature was present on that particular starship) to allow the saucer section to escape the blast radius.
There have been many examples of warp core destabilisations. In most cases warp cores that have lost containment result in the core breaching and the vessel being destroyed. However there are examples of warp core restabilisation. During a warp core breach if there is sufficient time, the crew of a starship can in some cases restabilise the warp core.
A warp core breach is also one of two methods of destroying the ship if the auto destruct sequence is engaged.
A warp core breach is also a syntheholic drink seen in Deep Space Nine made by Quark for Doctor Bashir in the episode "His Way". It was never finished.
