WaveRider Communications Inc. was founded in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada, in the spring of 1997. After the formation of a headquarters in Toronto, Ontario, in 1998, the bulk of the company moved to Calgary, Alberta in the spring of 1999. The company consolidated and moved its Calgary operations to Toronto in 2002.

This company develops wireless network products that allow a telecommunications company, utility company, municipality or an Internet Service Provider to deliver wireless broadband access to business and residential subscribers.

These wireless network products are similar in design and function to IEEE 80211B and WiFi:

but with the following distinctions:

  • non-line-of-sight visibility achieved through the 900 MHz radio frequency spectrum
  • security is based on
    • registered authentication of the End-user device as a function of firmware
    • no reliance on IEEE 80211B hardware encryption (WEP)
    • wireless transceivers that operate outside of IEEE 802.11 specifications,
      • slower, for improved robustness in difficult environments
      • higher power output, yields a range of up to approximately 7 km (4 miles) with a directional antenna
  • proprietary media access protocol similar to, but not compatible with, IEEE 802.11 specifications
  • 19-inch rack mounting configurations and optional accessory hardware
