Welterweight

Welterweight is a weight class division in combat sports. Originally the term welterweight was named for boxing, but other combat sports also began to use it for their own weight devision system like kick boxing etc. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight.

Boxing

A welterweight boxer weighs between 140 pounds and 147 pounds (63.5 and 66.7 kg). Notable welterweights include Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Oscar De La Hoya, Thomas Hearns, Félix Trinidad, Johnny Basham, Joe Walcott, Emile Griffith, Jose Napoles, Carmen Basilio, Barney Ross, Henry Armstrong, Pernell Whitaker, Shane Mosley , David Estrada, Vernon Forrest, Ricardo Mayorga, Cory Spinks, Zab Judah, Ricky Hatton and the current champion Carlos Baldomir.

The Welterweight division is one of the most prized divisions in boxing. It has had many stars, notably Robinson, Leonard, De La Hoya and Trinidad. Ray Robinson is generally considered the greatest Welterweight Champion of all time.

Kickboxing

The weight devision system is different in each organizations. So the weight devisions of some international organizations are exampled in this case.

  • World Kickboxing Association (WKA) fixed 140–147 pounds (63.5–67 kg) for welterweight.
  • International sport Karate Association (ISKA) set 142.1–147 pounds (64.6–66.8 kg) for welterweight.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai was fixed its weight devision as similar as boxing. According to World Muay Thai Council (WMC), its welter weight is from 140 pounds (63.5 kg) to 147 pounds (66.6 kg). And World Muay Thai Federation (WMF) which is the official amateur organization fixed from 63.5 to 67 kg for adult. Junior category is the same as adult one.

Shoot boxing

The official rule of shoot boxing says between 65 and 67 kg (143.3 to 147.7 lb) is welterweight.

Mixed martial arts

Welterweight is fixed by some MMA organizations which are like shooto, PRIDE, UFC and so on.

  • PRIDE set the welterweight limit at 185 pounds (84 kg) or less.
  • The UFC fixed the welterweight division between 155 pounds and 169.9 pounds (70.3 and 77.1 kg).
  • The International Shooto Commission (ISC) set welterweight as 70.0 kg (154 lb) or less.
