Image tagging management

In this context the term image tag is used for a template tag such as Template:Tl or Template:Tl that identifies the copyright status of an image. There's a complete list, along with descriptions, at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. Image tagging is the helpful task of finding untagged images and adding tags to them.

Why is it important?

Images that don't contain copyright information may be deleted, since we have no way of knowing whether it's legal to use the image or not. A tagged image will automatically have standard copyright text included, and it will be given a category regarding its copyright status. Further, automated tasks, such as moving images to the Commons, are much easier with tagged images.

But there's a more immediate reason to tag images. Mandriva Linux plans to include a static copy of Wikipedia in their next Linux distribution. (See meta:Wikimedia and Mandriva for details.) Images that have not been tagged will not be included. It's great that Wikipedia is being promoted in this way, and we want it to look as good as possible.

How can I help?

The links below contain lists of images that were untagged at the time the lists were made. Just pick one and click on the images listed. Some will have already been tagged – you can simply delete those from the list. For others, it will be obvious what tag they should get. Add the tag, save the image, and remove it from the list. If you can't tell what tag an image should get, you can simply leave it for someone else to tag, or you can tag it as {{no source|month=June|day=10|year=2025}}, or {{subst:No source|no source|month={{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}|day={{CURRENTDAY}}|year={{CURRENTYEAR}}}} remove it from the list, and put the following on the uploader's talk page:

{{subst:Image source|Image:ImageName.jpg}} --~~~~

Also, for an image with author information and source but no notice about licensing information and copyright status, use {{no license|month=June|day=10|year=2025}} on the image page, or {{subst:No source|no license|month={{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}|day={{CURRENTDAY}}|year={{CURRENTYEAR}}}} remove it from the list, and put the following on the uploader's talk page:

{{subst:Image copyright|Image:ImageName.jpg}} --~~~~

Duesentrieb's Untagged Images tool

Duesentrieb has put together a most excellent Untagged Images tool, which dynamically generates lists of untagged images, sortable & groupable by user. It is a fine alternative to the static lists below.

To generate new static lists (with 1000 items on each page), use a URL of the following form:

http://tools.wikimedia.de/~daniel/WikiSense/UntaggedImages.php?wikifam=.wikipedia.org&wikilang=en&order=img_timestamp&ofs=0&max=1000&ofs=1000&format=wiki

incrementing ofs=1000 by 1000 until the list comes up empty. Simply copy the results into wiki pages and voila, new static lists...

December '05 - description of a new type of problem needing a new resolution

There's a class of issue new (to me, at least) which is that of blank image description pages which has no link to an image, but for which there is an identically named image on the commons. An example (at least until it is deleted) is Image:William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) - Day (1881).jpg. The symptom of this problem is that the page has no File history section, and does have the This is a file from the Wikimedia Commons infobox. The correct course of action is to mark the image description page with {{subst:ifd}} and list it on WP:IFD with a reason of NI (no image)... or else speedy it with {{db|Empty image page not linked to an image. Image is on the commons.}}. Note, however, that some blank image pages are used to categorise the image so that it can be found within a category listing - example being Image:Hoggar1.jpg which is found in Category:Images of Algeria

so an Admin can delete the page, or if you are an admin, please delete the page.

Also, see Category:Images with no copyright tag and subcategories.

Standard header for subpages

  • Please remove links from this page when you have tagged the image, even if the tag is merely {{no source|month=June|day=10|year=2025}}, else other users will have to revisit images you've tagged, thereby wasting their time. {{no source|month=June|day=10|year=2025}} links wind up listed in Category:Images with unknown source as of 10 June 2025 and can be dealt with later.
  • If a fair use image is not used in an article, tag as Template:Tl
  • Consider putting '{{subst:Image source|Image:ImageName.jpg}} --~~~~ on the uploader's talk pages if the image has no information on its source.
  • Consider putting '{{subst:Image copyright|Image:ImageName.jpg}} --~~~~ on the uploader's talk pages if the image has information on its source but no licence information.

Tips and tricks

  • You don't have to be a copyright expert to tag images! Most of the time, all it takes is a little common sense. If the image is from NASA, use the Template:Tl tag. If the image description page says it's released into the public domain, use the Template:Tl tag. If one looks complicated, you can always skip it.
  • Found a completely unidentified image without even a single word about its origin? Does the description page say "from Google"? Try copying the filename, including the extension (in other words, leave .gif, .jpg, .png, etc. intact, but cut off the "Image:"), and using that as a keyword in Google's Image Search. It's quick and simple, and, as long as the uploader didn't rename it, it will come up with the exact same image. Even if this fails, a variety of different keywords may allow you to find that same picture through much the same route the uploader probably took to find it.
  • If it is obvious from comments or a copyright statement that the uploader owns the copyright to an image, then by virtue of their having uploaded it to the Wikipedia, you can assume it is GFDL. Check to see if the uploader multi-licenses their contributions. (Obviously this does not apply if the uploader does not own the copyright, nor does this apply in situations in which it is not clear whether the uploader owns the copyright.)
  • If you would like to avoid edit conflicts with other people tagging images, add the following message to the top of the page you are working on:
    • '''~~~ is tagging the images on this page. ** If you would like to help, please choose an alternative page ** from the list at [[Wikipedia:Untagged Images]].'''
  • When you add a tag, you might want to use an edit summary that will attract new taggers. Here's a suggested summary:
    • Thousands of images have no copyright tags. [[Wikipedia:Untagged Images|You can help!]]
  • If you need more information about the source of the image, tag it as {{no source|month=June|day=10|year=2025}} (or just {{subst:nsd}}), remove it from the list, and put the following on the uploader's talk page:
{{subst:Image source|Image:ImageName.jpg}} --~~~~
  • Also, for an image with author information and source but no notice about licensing information and copyright status, use Template:Tl (or just {{subst:nld}}) on the image page, remove it from the list, and put the following on the uploader's talk page:
{{subst:Image copyright|Image:ImageName.jpg}} --~~~~
  • Tag orphan images (images that are not linked into the main namespace}} that are clearly unfree as {{subst:orfud}}.

You can add a babel box to identify Untagged Image members by adding Template:Tl.
