Women's rights

Image:Talibanbeating.jpg Women's rights typically refers to the legal, social and human rights of women.
In all societies, with few exceptions, women have been and continue to be subjugated by men, and other women. When John Lennon sang in 1972 that "woman is the nigger of the world...woman is the slave of the slaves" he knew what he was talking about. At all levels, women are looked down upon, and those at even the lowest caste of society can find ready and convenient objects of derision in their wives and daughters.
Although significant advances have been made in some parts of the world, in many others women continue to be thought of at best as children and at worst as mere chattel belonging to their fathers or husbands.
Although by number women constitute a majority of the population, making them one of the most populous "minorities", they wield disproportionate political power.
All oppressed peoples, if they are to ever have a chance of gaining full and equal status in a society, require some of those in power to champion their cause. In fact, many of those that have been previously oppressed and struggled to liberate themselves still cannot their own struggle with that of women.
