History

Yellowcard was formed in 1997 in Jacksonville, Florida after meeting at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. The band was made up of six members: Ben Dobson(vocals), Todd Clarry (vocals, guitar), Ben Harper (guitar), Sean Mackin (violin), Warren Cooke (bass guitar), and Longineu W. Parsons III (drums). The band released their first album, Midget Tossing, in 1997 and met with some success, before undergoing line-up changes. Ben Dobson and Todd Clarry were replaced by Ryan Key (vocals, guitar) who convinced the band that they would not achieve success in Florida in the long run, so they decided to move to Southern California. The new group released their debut album, One for the Kids (Lobster Records), in 2001, and followed up with The Underdog EP (Fueled by Ramen Records) in 2002 which were both well-received by fans. However, Yellowcard's real public reception came after signing with Capitol Records in 2003 and releasing Ocean Avenue. Fans loved the album's sincere lyrics and unique musical style (mostly due to Mackin's violin playing). The band's popularity continues today; they have toured with bands such as Something Corporate and Less Than Jake, as well as appeared on the soundtrack of the hit film Spider-Man 2 and on the compilation "Rock Against Bush Vol. II, with a cover of Lagwagon's song "Violins". The band's three singles from their 2003 release are "Way Away," "Ocean Avenue," and "Only One."

New Album

Image:Yellowcard WF.jpg For a large part of 2005, Yellowcard worked on their new CD, entitled Lights and Sounds. The album was released on January 24 2006. Pete and Ryan moved to New York City in January of 2005 and started writing the album while the rest of the band recuperated in California from 18 straight months of touring. The album is somewhat of a concept album, with many songs based on the band's negative feelings towards Los Angeles. 20 songs were recorded for the album, 14 of which are on the CD, plus a B-side available on import versions, CD singles and at the iTunes Music Store, called "Three Flights Down". The title track, "Lights and Sounds," was the first single released and is also featured on Burnout Revenge. In the first week of release the album sold just over 90,000 copies. "Rough Landing, Holly" is the second single, with a video released in March 2006.

Ryan says that "Holly became this person on the record who appears in a lot of the songs, and at times you love her and at times you hate her. At times she's good to you and sometimes she's bad. She's in a song called "Holly Wood Died," and in another song called "Rough Landing, Holly," which is my favorite song on the album." --MTV.com News

Current Members

Lineup Changes

Yellowcard has gone through several lineup changes ever since Midget Tossing

Midget Tossing

  • Ben Dobson - Lead Vocals
  • Todd Clarry - Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals
  • Warren Cooke - Bass
  • Ben Harper- Lead Guitar
  • Longineu Warren Parsons III (LP)- Drums

Note: While Sean Mackin was featured on some of the songs, he was not a member yet.

Where We Stand

Same line up as Midget Tossing except this time Mackin is accepted as a full time member. Ben Dobson loses interest in the band and leaves.

Still Standing EP

The band finds Ryan Key to take on vocal duties. Soon after Still Standing EP is released Todd Clarry leaves Yellowcard. Ryan Key then replaces both Clarry and Dobson's duties: vocals and guitar. (Rumour is said that Todd Clarry wrote the lyrics for Drifting off One For The Kids, but was left uncredited.)

One For The Kids

  • Ryan Key - Lead Vocals,Rhythm Guitar
  • Sean Mackin - Violin, Backing vocals
  • Warren Cooke - Bass
  • Ben Harper - Lead Guitar
  • Longineu Warren Parsons III (LP)- Drums

The Underdog EP

Same lineup as One For The Kids. Soon after the Underdog EP, Warren Cooke gets into a fight with the band members and leaves (the song: Empty Apartment is about this). The band calls upon an old friend: Pete Mosely from Inspection 12 to play bass for them.

Ocean Avenue

During the recording of Ocean Avenue, Mosely leaves the band because of personal problems. The band strikes out again for a new bass player and find Alex Lewis. Lewis agrees to join and the band goes on tour. Alex Lewis becomes quite a popular member of Yellowcard but in the middle of the tour, Pete Mosely works out his issues and asks if he can rejoin. Because he was their friend since high school, Lewis was forced to leave (one of the most touching moments of Yellowcard history) and Mosely was back as their bass player.

Lights and Sounds

After the 18 month tour, Yellowcard went on hiatus and took shelter in New York City. Soon after the short break the band began to record their new album in Sunset Studio, California. When the band appeared in public again, many fans noticed that the lead guitarist and founding member Ben Harper was missing from the lineup. Many questions from fans aroused but the issue with Harper was kept confidental. After 3 months of questioning Yellowcard announced that Ben Harper had been kicked out of the band. The reason for his booting was because the band thought he spent too much time on his side-projet record label Takeover and did not contribute enough to the new record.

Harper: "I would record my parts and then take off. I wasn't the guy hanging out in the studio. And in the past, that wasn't the case. Usually, I'd be the guy hanging out in the studio. I'm the lead guitar player. I play all the riffs. But I had started spending a lot more time working with Takeover, and [the band] said they wanted the old Ben back. They kept telling me I wasn't there for things. And this summer, they all pulled me over to a certain member's house and they told me straight up, "Ben, we want you to focus on Takeover Records and leave Yellowcard to us." ... At the end of the summer, they barred me from the practice space. There's something really scary going on with money and business within Yellowcard. It's gotten to the point where they're not thinking as friends anymore. And I don't know if it's because of managers or lawyers, but it was so easy for them to get rid of me. It was like, "You're out of the band. You can't talk to me anymore. Talk to management." "

http://www.mtv.com/bands/y/yellowcard/qa_feature_011706/ explains more on the departure.

For the promotional Lights and Sounds tour, Yellowcard recruited former Staring Back's Ryan Mendez to replace Harper full time. Only Key and Mosely have explained about the banishment of Ben Harper. Sean Mackin and L.P. have not said anything yet which means the statements made by Ryan Key and Pete Mosely may not be true and something even worse might have happened with Ben Harper. Many fans have suspected that Sean and Logineu might have tried to defend Ben because they have been friends since Midget Tossing.

Ex-Yellowcard Members

  • Ben Dobson – Vocals
  • Todd Clarry – Guitar, Backing Vocals
  • Warren Cooke – Bass
  • Alex Lewis – Bass, Backing vocals
  • Ben Harper – Lead Guitar

Trivia

  • The band studied in the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts.
  • Ryan plays Gibson SG Standards as well as Gibson Les Pauls.
  • Ben Harper plays Gibson Les Paul Standards.
  • Sean has a total of 6 electric violins: 2 Fender FV-1 (black and white) and 3 Zetas (1 red, 1 black, 1 white). He also has a classical violin made hundreds of years ago.
  • Sean is of Japenese decsendence.
  • Pete Mosely plays a Fender Precision Bass (like most punk bassists)
  • Ryan Key used to play in Craig's Brother and Modern Amusement.
  • Ryan Key had a cameo appearance in the movie: Sleepover as the vocalist/guitarist in the band playing at the dance party.
  • Sean's previous trademark move was backflipping off the amplifiers during the parts with no violin. This can be seen at the Way Away music video, Way Away live at Pepsi Smash, and several times during the Beyond Ocean Avenue DVD. However he has recently "retired" the backflip because of the mature style of music Yellowcard have gone through. Surprisingly though, at a recent concert on April 19, 2006 at Cal Poly Pomona, Sean did indeed backflip off the amplifier.
  • On Ocean Avenue, the song Twenty Three surprisingly has Sean singing lead vocals instead of Ryan Key.
  • Ryan Key is a big fan of Pearl Jam, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Ben Folds Five and Coldplay.
  • LP says that more people should listen to Slayer
  • LP has started learning drums since the age of 5 and played with his dad: Logineu Parsons in his jazz ensemble
  • Sean is a heavy drinker. Previously on tour, Sean was drunk and jumped off a 2 story balcony, ending up with a scar on his forehead (which you can still see today). On another event of partying and drinking, the band was playing a hit me hit you game: Sean punched Ryan so hard that he broke his jaw.
  • The song Avondale is a response to a song by Inspection 12 named: Dopplehanger. In which the lyrics state: "So pull a knife out of my back, inventiveness is what you lack, and I wont stand for this disloyalty." On Yellowcard's: Avondale, the lyrics respond to this by replying to the song: "I stuck a knife into his back, inventiveness is what I lack, he's always hanging up on loyalty." This means the feud is over with Dan and Ryan Key and the pair are friends again.
  • Yellowcard had a short feud with Good Charlotte. On a warped tour night, Sean (drunk) stepped onto the GC bus and asked them to party with Yellowcard. The GC tour manager thought Sean was there to cause trouble and acted tough. However Sean has talked with Benji and Joel and the 2 bands have settled their differences.
  • Self titled track Ocean Avenue is about their hometown: Jacksonville.
  • The song: Believe is dedicated to the brave firemen who risked their lives during 9/11.
  • The song: View From Heaven is dedicated to Scott Shad, the drummer in Inspection 12 who died from a car accident. Scott Shad was friends with the band, especially to Pete Mosely.
  • The newest video off Lights and Sounds: Rough Landing, Holly has somewhat a connection with the Ocean Avenue video. The girl and the briefcase that Ryan is interested in from the Ocean Avenue video appear again. Ryan is being chased (not just by Sean and LP but by his past) and is wearing the same clothes. Also at one bit where Ryan dives into the suitcase you can see that it is the same room that Ryan woke up in during the Ocean Avenue video.
  • "How I Go" is heavily based on the movie Big Fish. It also features Dixie Chick's singer Natalie Maines.
  • "Martin Sheen Or JFK" is based on The Goonies.
  • L.P. is the only original member left in the band.
  • The Suit-case in "Ocean Avenue" & "Rough Landing, Holly" contains water.
  • "For Pete's Sake" on "One For The Kids" was written about Pete Mosely, for them to stop arguing.
  • Ryan's tatoos contain his favourite Marvel Characters.
  • Ryan's tatoo on his wrist reads 'The world has turned and left me here', a song by Weezer.
