Schlenkerla is a historical brewery-tavern in Bamberg, Franconia, Germany. It is most renowned for its Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier ("authentic Schlenkerla smoked beer"), with a distinctively smoky aroma and flavour that is consistently present amongst the three varieties: Bock, Märzen and a wheat beer . The tavern features a Gothic ceiling known as the Dominikanerklause.
Schlenkerla roughly translates as "Dangling". Schlenker is a German verb meaning to swing or to dangle. The -la suffix is typical of the Franconian dialect. The name reportedly originated with a previous owner of the brewery who possessed a hobbling gait. An image of this hobbling brewer can be seen in the designs on the Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier bottle.
