Image:Nttvsc3a.jpg Nicktoons are animated television programs airing on the children's television channel Nickelodeon and its many spin-offs.
Before Nicktoons, the only regularly-scheduled animation program on Nickelodeon was Pinwheel, an anthology series ala Oh Yeah! Cartoons.
When Pinwheel ended its run in 1989, Nickelodeon returned to airing primarily live-action shows. Then, on Sunday, August 11, 1991 at exactly 10:00 am EST, the very first Nicktoon was aired - Doug. And then, when Doug was over, there was Rugrats. The Ren and Stimpy Show was after that. And, every Sunday, that repeated.
Over the years, more Nicktoons were created and aired. Other Nicktoons were created for Nick Jr., Nickelodeon's late morning and early afternoon lineup for younger children.
All of the earlier Nicktoons, as well as Nicktoons from Nickelodeon's international networks, can be seen on NickToons Network, a 24-hour digital cable/satellite network.

Notes
- There were five proposed Nicktoons made in 1989, that tested poorly in the pilot stage and were not made into series.
- Doug was the first Nicktoon to air at exactly 7:00am. The first episode that aired was "Doug Bags a Nematoad". Doug was sold to Disney in 1996 (It was also the only Nicktoon to be sold to another company).
- The three original Nicktoons that aired on August 11, 1991, each had their own series revival, following their respective series cancellations (Doug in 1996; Rugrats in 1997; Ren and Stimpy in 1995).
- The X's is the newest Nicktoon to air. The second newest Nicktoon to air was Catscratch.
- SpongeBob SquarePants is currently Nickelodeon's most popular cartoon.
- Rugrats was the longest running Nicktoon. It spanned 11 1/2 seasons, 2 spinoffs (All Grown Up! and Rugrats Pre-School Daze) and 3 movies (The Rugrats Movie, Rugrats in Paris, and Rugrats Go Wild).
- Its motto: "Not Just Cartoons, We're Nicktoons!"
