Sludge rock is a style of alternative rock centered on very loud guitars producing a "sludgy" sound. The term was coined in the late 1980s and has evolved somewhat to include stoner rock as well. And can be considered as a forerunner of grunge.
Popular sludge rock acts have included Motörhead, Mudhoney, Monster Magnet, and the MC5.
