Cannon County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 12,826. Its county seat is Woodbury6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 688 km² (266 mi²). 688 km² (266 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.02% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 12,826 people, 4,998 households, and 3,643 families residing in the county. The population density was 19/km² (48/mi²). There were 5,420 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (20/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.87% White, 1.46% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 4,998 households out of which 33.30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.60% were married couples living together, 9.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.10% were non-families. 24.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.90% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the county, the population was spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $32,809, and the median income for a family was $38,424. Males had a median income of $28,659 versus $21,489 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,405. 12.80% of the population and 9.60% of families were below the poverty line. 14.00% of those under the age of 18 and 17.80% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

The county was named for former Tennessee governor Newton Cannon.
