Sharif University of Technology (دانشگاه صنعتی شریف), formerly named Aryamehr University of Technology (دانشگاه صنعتی آریامهر) is popularly believed to be the most prominent technical, engineering and scientific university of Iran, that attracts the best and most outstanding talents in these fields annually, to the extent that more than 65% of 200 top rank participants in trans-country university entrance exams for bachelor's degree are admitted to the university every year. Moreover, the university holds the highest rank among the universities of the country in respect of admission percentage at master's level in the technical, scientific, and engineering fields with the exception of last year. But in the recent years in some majors such as Electrical Engineering, its rival, Tehran University, has attracted more international attention due to its increasing number of postgraduates in European and American top uiversities.
The university is located in Tehran, not far from the Azadi Square and is named after Majid Sharif Vaghefi, a former student who was killed in 1975.

History
The university was first founded in 1965 with the name Aryamehr Technical University by Dr. Mohammad Ali Mojtahedi (محمد علی مجتهدی).
In 1972, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi appointed the world renowned scholar Sayyed Hosein Nasr as president of the university with the goal of modeling the school based on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but with roots in Iranian culture.[1]
The university has grown to an elite school today with over 9000 students and over 500 faculty members.
