Northern Arizona University (NAU) is a university in Flagstaff, Arizona in the United States.

As of 2004, the university has 20,000 students. 14,000 of these are situated in the main Flagstaff campus. Although primarily an educational institution, NAU undertakes a growing amount of research. The school is known for its specialties in the education program and its hotel and restaurant management programs.

Contents

History

Initially named the Northern Arizona Normal School it was formed on September 11, 1899. In 1925, the State of Arizona recognized the school, allowing it to grant the degree of bachelor of education. The institution renamed itself the Northern Arizona State Teachers College following this.

In 1945, its name changed once again to the Arizona State College at Flagstaff. A year later the college began offering the degrees of master of arts and bachelor of science. In 1966 its name changed once more to the current Northern Arizona University (or NAU) when it was granted full university status.

Student Media

The university has an award-winning, weekly, independently student-run newspaper called "The Lumberjack," which is a 91-year-old publication, second-oldest in Northern Arizona. The Lumberjack is one of the oldest newspapers in northern Arizona, and prints local, national and international news, as well as segments on the local art scene, as well as following the University's athletic teams.

In their Student Media Connection in NAU's School of Communication, four student medias converge into one unit. The KJACK radio station offers listeners an eclectic mix of music as well as some political talk shows. They are available either in W. Flagstaff at 1680 AM or online at www.kjack.org

NAU Live! is a television news program produced by the SMC bi-weekly. It airs stories ranging from NAU's Campus to the top world news story. It is available in Flagstaff on Cablevision cable channel 4 or 59 at 5pm MST, and on Dish Network's UniversityHouse Channel 9pm MST. Recently, the staff of NAU Live! launched a news magazine show called UpFront: NAU's News Magazine, slated to become a regular appearance on northern Arizona televisions. www.naulive.com

JackCentral.com is the new outlet for the Student Media Connection, launching in Spring of 2006, it will encompass a mixture of print, television and radio news as well as showcase local events and student happenings. JackCentral.com is expected to become the center for student media information at NAU.

Choirs

The Northern Arizona University Choral Union consists of seven emsembles: Men's Chorale, Women's Chorale, University Singers, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Chamber Ensemble, the Harold M. Harter Memorial Handbell Choir, and the elite Shrine of the Ages Choir. Edith A. Copley (D.M.A., University of Cincinnati), joined the music faculty in 1990 and serves as Director of Choral Studies; Gary A. Weidenaar (D.M.A., University of Kansas) is the Associate Director of Choral Studies. In 1998, the Shrine of the Ages Choir performed at the National Conference of the National Association for Music Education (formerly MENC); in 2000, the Choir was featured at the American Choral Directors Association Western Division Convention.

Judith A. Cloud (D.M.A., Florida State University) is the chair of the vocal division, which produces one major operatic work per academic year, along with various opera scenes. The director of opera theater is Ferdinandus J. A. Schellen; participation in musical theater by students is not encouraged.

Famous alumni

Athletics

As of January 2005, Northern Arizona University's colors are blue and gold. The school colors changed in March of 2005 to navy blue and sage with the unveiling of the new logo. Gold is still an unofficial color and can be used as an accent. The school mascot is Louie the Lumberjack for both men's and women's teams. Northern Arizona sports teams participate in NCAA Division I (I-AA for football) in the Big Sky Conference. NAU has also hosted Arizona Cardinals training camp every year since the Cardinals moved to Arizona except 2005, due to an outbreak of norovirus.
