Combusken (known as ワカシャモ Wakasyamo in Japan, Jungglut in Germany and Galifeu in France) is one of the 395 fictional species of Pokémon from the Pokémon franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. Combusken is a stage 1 evolution of one of the three Hoenn starter Pokémon (the other two are Grovyle and Marshtomp).

Combusken is a portmanteau of the words combust and chicken. The origin of its Japanese name, Wakashamo, comes from "Wakai"(若い) meaning young and shamo (軍鶏) or game fowl. Therefore, Wakashamo means young fowl.

Characteristics

Comubsken, and its descendant Blaziken, are both famous for both their strong fiery attacks, and their powerful legs. A Blaziken's legs can throw and keep it in the air as well as Charizard's wings can, as is shown in the Silver Conference Tournament in the Pokémon animé, where Harrison's Blaziken, battled Ash's Charizard, and defeated with help from its aerial abilities, using the height to increase impact.

Combusken's legs are both fast and powerful, and to keep them at peak physical condition, many run through nearby fields and mountains to stay agile and strong. By doing this, Combusken can kick up to 10 times per second, not giving up easily.

Like Torchic, Combusken has a place within its body that stores and produces incredibly hot flames, up to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. Its strong will allows it to spew flames from its beak and to kick continuously until an opponent either faints or gives up.

In the video games

Combusken evolves from Torchic, the Fire Starter in Hoenn, at Level 16. By evolving into Combusken, it gains highers Stats, and becomes a dual-type of Fire/Fighting. It also loses its weakness to Ice-types, although there are very few Ice attacks around at the point before Combusken evolves. It also changes the Move List that Combusken can learn, as only Torchic can learn Flamethrower and Fire Spin, while Combusken and Blaziken learn Sky Uppercut and Blaze Kick.

Combusken then evolves, at LVL36, into Blaziken , a Stage-2, Fire/Fighting-type Pokémon. Blaziken is famous as being one of the most O.U. (OverUsed) Pokémon in both player-to-player fighting, and online battling sites. Blaziken boasts good Stats, a wide variety of TM's it can learn and a variety of moves that can be learnt naturally.

In the Anime

May's Combusken

Ash's co-protagonist, May, has a Combusken, which evolved from the Torchic she received from Professor Birch, just as she was setting out on her Pokémon adventure around Hoenn.

Before it evolved, May thought it was cute, explaining why she rarely used it in battle. Combusken evolved when it was trying to protect Ash's Corphish from a group of angry, newly evolved, Breloom, whose homes had been destroyed by Team Rocket. It is very playful, though since evolving it has shown that it can be tough when it wants to be.

May did not use Combusken in her Pokémon Contest matches initially, but as it evolved, she began using it more frequently. As to date, May's Combusken has appeared in the following Pokémon Contests:
