Erling Sven Lorentzen is the son of Øivind Lorentzen and Ragna Nilsen. He was born on 28 January 1923 at Oslo, Norway.

He married Princess Ragnhild of Norway, daughter of Olav V of Norway and Princess Märtha of Sweden on 15 May 1953 at Asker, Norway.

They have three children:

• Haakon Lorentzen born 23 August 1954
• Ingeborg Lorentzen born 27 February 1957
• Ragnhild Alexandra Lorentzen born 8 May 1968
