Daniela Mercury (born in Salvador, Bahia, 28 July, 1965) is a Brazilian singer whose styles include MPB and axé music, born to a Portuguese father and an Italian descended mother. She is strongly influenced by the tropicalismo movement. Her music is driven by insistent percussion (she has used Olodum on some tracks), and makes frequent local references, including Carnaval and Candomblé.

Her first album, self-titled, was a big hit, but her biggest hit to date is her second album, O Canto da Cidade, with over 2 million copies sold. It was the bestselling album of 1993.
Her next albums, Musica de Rua and Feijão com Arroz, released in 1994 and 1997, both did well and included lots of hits.
In 2000, with Sol da Liberdade, she received her last platinum certification and her 2001 album, Sou de Qualquer Lugar, sold poorly compared to the others, only receiving a gold certification.
In 2004 she sang in a concert with Paul McCartney, and received lots of media attention in Brazil.
In 2005 she released her first live album, from the series MTV Ao Vivo. It did better than her 2001 album but sold less, because of the phonographic industry crisis, and received gold certification in it second week.
Mercury took part in a government campaign to fight AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases during the 2005 Carnival celebrations in Brazil. She appeared in TV ads promoting the distribution of millions of free condoms and encouraging people to use them. Her role as an active advocate of safe sex and AIDS campaigns denied Mercury a chance to participate in the Vatican's Christmas celebrations in 2005. The Vatican had previously invited her, but changed its mind when it knew that she favored the use of condoms rather than abstinence in the fight against AIDS.
