Portland Street (砵蘭街) is a street in Hong Kong. It is located in Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok in Kowloon. A section in Mong Kok is arguably the most famous red light district in Hong Kong and popular scene in Hong Kong films.
With prostitutes from around the world, mostly from the Mainland China, making themselves available in hundreds of residential / commercial premises in the forms of massage parlours, night clubs, karaoke clubs, etc., Portland Street attracts locals and tourists alike all year round. Immigration Services often carry out raids in coodination with the police, to move overdue prostitute back to their home territory, uncovering underaged prostitution, as well as any related Triad or criminal activity. As shown in news reports, these raids often capture up to nearly twenty prostitutes.
Langham Place, a big shopping centre, hotel and office tower complex, is recently opened at the Mong Kok portion of this street.
The street portion across Argyle Street and Bute Street is home for more than 50 retails selling renovation materials such as toilet utensils, tiles, and wall papers.
The street was named after William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1783 and between 1807 and 1809.
