Pumping

Pumping can mean:

• The process of moving a liquid from one location to another, using a pump
• In lasers and optical parametric amplifiers, optical pumping provides the energy source that sustains the oscillation.
• In lactation, the action of extracting milk from mammalian mammary glands by mechanical means. A milking machine provides this function at commercial dairies, while a breast pump does the same for humans.
