A point source may refer to one of the following:

  • a source of air pollution emissions which has one specific coordinate such as a stack.
  • a source of light that is treated as having no physical extension.
  • a source of noise pollution that emanates from a specific location (for example, not a roadway).
  • a source in fluid flow, or in electrostatics.
  • a source of water pollution coming from a single location, such as wastewater outfall.
  • a source of wave action such as a stone thrown into water.

In general the energy or other emission of a point source will radiate in a circle or as a sphere.
