Anantapur

Anantapur is the headquarters of the Anantapur District. It occupies the southwest corner of the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The border district has Karnataka to the west, Chitoor District to the South, Kadapa district to the east and Kurnool district to the North. The district was constituted in 1882 from the erstwhile district of Bellary.

The economy is principally agrarian with very few industries. With very little rainfall the district is one of the most backward provinces in the state. Prominent crops include rice, cotton, maize, chillies, sesame, and sugar cane. Silk trade, limestone quarrying, iron and diamond mining constitute the few industries that are there.

The town of Anantapur has a population of 320,951 (agglomeration 4,26,359) as per the 2006 census. It is a fast growing town that has been upgraded to a town Municipal Corporation in 2005 with a population of above 400,000.

Anantapur is an important education center containing:

  2. JNTU Engineering College
  3. INTEL Engineering College
  4. Government Medical College
  5. Corporate Colleges like Nalanda, Chaitanya, Narayana etc.

Anantapur is connected to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai as the National Highway 7 and 205 and the Hyderabad/Bangalore railway line, Mumbai/Bangalore line, Delhi/Bangalore line pass through it.

Anantapur is a 31/2 hour drive from Bangalore.

Tadpatri

There are temples like Bugga Rama Lingeswara Swamy Temple, Chintala Venkata Ramana Swamy Temple and the Aluru Ranganatha Swamy temple. These temples were built by Timma Naidu sanctioned by Harihara and Bukka (Bugga) Raya of Vijayanagar.
