The Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB, ASOEE, or OPA) was founded in 1920 in Athens, Greece.

Introduction
In Greece it was formerly known as ASOEE: "Ανωτάτη Σχολή Οικονομικών και Εμπορικών Επιστημών (Α.Σ.Ο.Ε.Ε.), Anotati Sholi Oikonomikon kai Eborikon Epistimon (A.S.O.E.E.)". Its current Greek name is: "Οικονομικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (Ο.Π.Α.), Oikonomiko Panepistimio Athinon (OPA)". However, the general public still refers to it as ASOEE.
The initial name of the university after its establishment was Athens School of Commercial Studies. In 1926 it was renamed as Athens School of Economics and Business. Its current name was given in 1989.
It is the third oldest higher educational institute and the oldest in the fields of Economics and Business in Greece.
International recognition
In a research carried out by Der Spiegel magazine among 500 European Universities, AUEB ranked in the top 5% being listed in the 25th place. In the field of Econometrics, AUEB comes internationally in the 48th place according to the Journal of Econometric Theory. AUEB has been selected by the European Union as the Center of Excellence for European Studies in Greece. The European Documentation Center of the AUEB is the coordinator of all the European Documentation Centers of Greek Universities.
Meeting the challenge of internationalization, the Master Programme in Decision Sciences is offered entirely in English. Within this Programme the GeM Specialization offers a joint degree in collaboration with a number of outstanding Universities in Europe and the U.S.A..
The department of Computer Science gets 8000 citations per year and has 5 professors in the top 10000 researchers by citations according to ACM.
History
- Prior to 1955: Only one degree offered: Economics and Business combined.
- 1955: Two degrees offered, one in Economics and the other in Business Administration.
- 1984: Divided in three departments: Department of Economics, the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Statistics and Informatics.
