Opened on 24 June 1968, it broadcasts from its studios in Leeds on 92.4 (Holme Moss), 95.3 (Luddenden, two miles west of Halifax & Wharfedale, two miles north of Otley), 102.7 (Keighley, on Rombalds Moor near Riddlesden) 103.9 (Beecroft Hill, in Bramley near Leeds) FM, 774 (New Farnley, near the A58) AM and DAB.
The strongest signal is on 92.4FM, from the Holme Moss transmitter, and covers most of West Yorkshire. Holme Moss also broadcasts GMR and Radio Sheffield. The Keighley transmitter also carries television.
In 2004, BBC Radio Leeds became the second BBC local radio station in England, after BBC London 94.9, to broadcast 24 hours a day. Along with the BBC Yorkshire's television output, it moved, also in 2004, from the old studios on Woodhouse Lane to a new broadcasting centre in St Peter's Square, near the West Yorkshire Playhouse. It also has offices at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford.
Martin Kelner has an hour long Kick Off With Kelner football show each weekday at 6pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays has his 'Late Night Thing' from 10pm - 1am, which comes from Leeds and broadcasts pan-Yorkshire. From 7pm on weekdays, all Yorkshire BBC radio stations share the same programmes.
One of the station's most successful shows is the Alex Hall phone-in, broadcast at 10pm from Sunday to Thursday. Listeners from Yorkshire and from further afield call in with their observations or problems, and Alex swiftly distinguishes those with valid causes for concern from those who need to "get a grip".
