BBC Radio Sheffield is the BBC Local Radio service for English metropolitan county of South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. It was the second BBC local radio station, beginning on 15 November 1967. It broadcasts from its studios in Sheffield on 88.6 (Crosspool, Sheffield), 94.7 (Chesterfield), 104.1 FM, 1035 (Broadfield Road, Sheffield) AM and DAB. It is also now available through live streaming on the internet. The strongest 104.1FM signal is broadcast at 2,500ft from the Holme Moss transmitter (actually in West Yorkshire, on the border with Derbyshire), enabling the signal to be clearly heard over much of Derbyshire and north Nottinghamshire in the Worksop area. The Crosspool transmitter on Tapton Hill also has Hallam FM on 97.4FM, Galaxy 105 on 105.6FM and Real Radio on 107.7FM. The Chesterfield transmitter also has Peak 107 FM on 107.4FM.
'The Breakfast Show' is presented by Antonia Brickell, who between 6am and 8.30am brings listeners the days news and news features. There are news updates every 20 minutes presented by veteran broadcaster and Sony Award nominee Everard Davy.
The mid-morning show is presented by a local stand-up comic, and also a Sony Award nominee, Toby Foster, from 8.30am until 11am,. He claims to have the biggest local audience at this time of day. Toby's show is a mix of music and entertainment with strong text and email input from listeners. Toby is not only a comic and radio presenter but runs a chain of local comedy clubs and appeared the hit TV comedy Phoenix Nights. Toby is joined on air by his producer Jamie Campbell who makes regular contributions to the show.
From 11am until 2pm another local broadcasting icon, Rony Robinson, presents the daily phone-in show. Rony likes to get out and about, with regular outside broadcasts, and also hosts weekly consumer affairs features.
The afternoon show is presented by another stand-up comic; Jimmy Carrol. Again his show is mainly a mix of music and comedy with several competitions and a regular feature looking back at the music and events of a certain year in history. Jimmy's show runs from 2pm until 5.30pm.
Between 5.30pm and 6pm is the evening news show, 'Live From Five Thirty'. Co-presented by two newsreaders from the stations pool of broadcast journalists (typically Tom Green, Wendy Middleton, Kate Linderholm or Anna McCalliog). It is a fast-paced look at the major events of the day in the worlds of news, sport, finance and showbiz.
Football phone-in 'Football Heaven' runs between 6pm and 7pm, this is co-presented by two members of the BBC Radio Sheffield sports team (usually Paul Walker, Seth Bennett or Luke Wileman).
Later in the day there's a mix of programming. During the football season, there are often live commentaries on matches featuring Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Chesterfield, Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers or Rotherham United.
Other evening shows include a general sports show hosted by Seth Bennett; 'Raw Talent' with Jane Kitson which plays new music from unsigned bands in South Yorkshire and the North Midlands; a sports discussion show hosted by boxer Johnny Nelson and David Markwell's 'Classic Soul and Disco' show.
After 10pm on weekdays, the BBC local radio stations in Yorkshire join forces, Alex Hall holds the fort until 1am, with a call-in programme. On Fridays and Saturdays, Martin Kelner has his light-hearted banter, and charmingly obscure 'Late Thing'.
At weekends presenters include Dean Pepall who hosts breakfast shows on Saturday and Sunday, and former Cracer-jack star Bernie Clifton.
During the football season the centre-piece of Saturday afternoon programming is 'Football Heaven' which often features live commentary of games involving local teams. It is directly followed by 'Praise Or Grumble' which has the honour of being the world's first football phone-in.
