BookFinder.com was founded in 1997 by Anirvan Chatterjee, then a student at the University of California, Berkeley. The company is based in Berkeley, California. In 2005, BookFinder.com was acquired by Abebooks.

The site was originally located at www.mxbf.com, a domain which is still valid as a redirect to www.bookfinder.com.
